How It Works:

Threshold Inhibition – Prevents scale from forming in supersaturated solutions

1. Threshold Inhibition

  • What it does: Prevents the formation of scale even when the concentration of sparingly soluble salts (like calcium carbonate or sulfate) exceeds their solubility limits.

  • How: Antiscalants delay or inhibit the nucleation of crystals by interfering at the molecular level.

2. Crystal Modification

Distorts crystal structure for soft, non-adherent scale.

  • What it does: Alters the shape and structure of scale crystals as they begin to form.

  • How: Antiscalant molecules bind to crystal growth sites, distorting the normal structure, resulting in soft, less adhesive, and easily removable scale.

3. Dispersion

Keeps particles suspended and off membrane surfaces


  • What it does: Keeps particulate matter and micro-crystals suspended in the water, preventing them from depositing on membrane surfaces.

  • How: Antiscalants impart a strong negative surface charge, causing particles to repel each other and the membrane surface.
